Over the years I have had the privilege of having the opportunity of seeing several (if not most) of the Live stage performances performed at the Sight and Sound theater in Branson, Mo.  They opened in 2008 and have featured a variety of biblically related shows such as “Noah – The Musical”, “Moses”, “Samson”, “David”, and the currently performing (2023-2024) “Queen Esther”.  They all have been wonderful and the Queen Esther Show is another fantastic production that I recommend all to see.  Read on about my personal review of Queen Esther, as well as how YOU can score yourself some discount tickets for your family.

I have finally had the opportunity of watching Queen Esther in mid-November of 2023.  As you can see from the photo above the Christmas lights are already up and the show will be playing all the way until December 30th!  However, no worries if you can’t make it in 2023, because Queen Esther will also be performing at the Sight and Sound theater in 2024.  Just make sure that you don’t miss this show!  Let me tell you some of the reasons why.

My Review of Queen Esther Live on Stage Performance in Branson

In the heart of Branson’s theatrical landscape, I recently had the privilege of experiencing the Queen Esther Show, and it was nothing short of a regal revelation. From the moment the curtains lifted, revealing the intricate set that transported us to ancient Persia, to the final crescendo of the captivating musical score, this production was a majestic journey through history and a celebration of the indomitable spirit of Queen Esther.

The theater is immaculate, and the stage can not be described in just photos alone.  I would have taken video, but it is not allowed during the show.  You can however, pick up a copy of the performance after the show.  They record each show live and then sell them out in the lobby.

Here is a photo the helps to encapsulate the sheer size of the production.  However, that doesn’t capture the entire experience.  The stage wraps around to the side of the theater (on both sides) for a full panoramic view.  Also, real animals will be walking down the aisle right next to you.  You will be immersed into the entire experience of this spectacular presentation!

I came to the show with only limited knowledge about the history of Queen Esther.  I am not a bible scholar, especially the Old Testament.  For those who like I may not know about the history, I did a little research and provided a bit of a summary of her role in history.

Background of Queen Esther

Queen Esther’s background history is rooted in the ancient Persian Empire during the 5th century BCE. The story unfolds in the Book of Esther in the Old Testament of the Bible. At the time, King Xerxes I (also known as Ahasuerus) held a grand banquet for his nobles, showcasing the opulence of his reign. During the festivities, Queen Vashti’s refusal to appear before the king led to her dismissal, creating a vacancy for a new queen. In search of a replacement, a royal decree was issued to gather beautiful young women from across the kingdom. Among them was Esther, an orphaned Jewish girl raised by her cousin Mordecai. Esther’s grace and beauty captivated King Xerxes, and she ultimately became the new queen, though her Jewish heritage remained a carefully guarded secret.

The plot thickened when Haman, a powerful official in the king’s court, harbored resentment towards Mordecai, who refused to bow to him. Upon discovering Mordecai’s Jewish identity, Haman plotted not only to punish Mordecai but to exterminate all the Jews in the Persian Empire. Esther, initially hesitant to reveal her Jewish background, found herself in a critical position “for such a time as this” when Haman’s wicked plan threatened her people. Her courage, strategic intervention, and the subsequent turn of events showcase the providential nature of Esther’s rise to queenship and her instrumental role in the salvation of the Jewish people, a story that has resonated through generations as a testament to faith and divine providence.

Ok, back to the review 🙂

The Characters

  1. Queen Esther: The central character of the story, Esther, is a Jewish orphan who becomes the Queen of Persia. Her courage and wisdom play a crucial role in saving her people from a plot to destroy them.
  2. King Xerxes (Ahasuerus): The ruler of the Persian Empire, King Xerxes is initially unaware of Esther’s Jewish heritage. His decisions and interactions with Esther drive much of the plot.
  3. Mordecai: Esther’s cousin who raises her after her parents’ death. Mordecai is a wise and loyal character who plays a significant role in uncovering a plot against the king and guiding Esther.
  4. Haman: An antagonist in the story, Haman is a high-ranking official in the king’s court. He harbors a deep-seated grudge against Mordecai and devises a wicked plan to annihilate the Jewish people.
  5. Supporting Characters: Depending on the adaptation, there may be additional supporting characters such as palace officials, courtiers, townspeople, and perhaps other biblical figures.

I can’t rave enough above the talent of the entire cast. All were world class actors, and they could sing beautifully.  I got chills and several points in the production and I felt emotionally touched for days afterwards.
